7 November 2011 - new list of HMRC targets
HMRC has published a new list of sectors it intends to target with its compliance taskforces.
The list, focusing on particular activities in different parts of the country, is as follows:
- scrap metal dealers in Scotland, focusing on those who are deliberately suppressing their income or inflating expenditure to evade paying tax;
- construction traders who are self employed or run their own company who suppress sales or over-claim expenses in the North West and North Wales;
- taxpayers not submitting corporation tax, income tax , PAYE and VAT returns in the South East;
- fast food outlets deliberately falsifying their records and mis-declaring their true sales levels to avoid paying the correct taxes in Scotland; and
- landlords – owning or renting three or more properties – evading their tax responsibilities in North West and North Wales.
HMRC is planning 12 taskforces in 2011/12, with more to follow in 2012/13.
Businesses and individuals who may fall into any of the above categories should urgently consider approaching HMRC and negotiating a settlement in order to maximise the discount to any penalty that might be charged, which they will not receive if they are first contacted by HMRC.
