It has been reported that HMRC has effectively extended the deadline for the submission of 2011 self assessment returns from 31 January 2012 to 2 February 2012, by stating that no interest or penalty will be charged in relation to returns received on 1 or 2 February. The relaxation is due to a planned strike on 31 January by the Public and Commercial Services Union.
Anyone who files their return after 2 February will be fined £100 regardless of the amount of tax due unless they have a reasonable excuse. Excuses which would normally be accepted include the loss of documents through theft, fire or flood and the onset of a life-threatening illness.
Interest on late paid tax will only run from 3 February 2012.
