Packaged software implementation

You have just signed off the purchase of new business software and are pleased with the results - but what about the implementation?

As independent business advisers, we come across many failed implementation projects. Some never get off the ground, some end up in litigation, and others are simply disappointing. The causes of failure are usually easy to see in retrospect:

  • The business people did not keep control of the project. Instead, they delegated too much to the computer people, the supplier or, worse, consultants.
  • System suppliers did not impose the disciplines necessary to meet timescale, budget or quality needs.
  • The customer failed to meet its side of the bargain and either didn't prepare adequately or failed to provide the right resource at the right time.
  • Development work was defined in terms of want not need, resulting in a larger and more complex project than either party could handle.

Our approach to software implementation includes:

  • Ensuring success by:
    • Building an effective implementation team.
    • Developing a pragmatic implementation plan.
    • Developing 'go-live' criteria.
    • Resolving complex technical issues.
  • Managing suppliers:
    • Defining the roles, responsibilities and contributions to the project, including realistic costs and timescales.
    • Resolving contractual issues.
  • Preparing for implementation through:
    • Training - achieving a balance between supplier, bespoke course, and 'on-the-job'.
    • Procedure development.
    • Acceptance testing.
    • Volume and stress testing.
    • Data take-on and clean-up.

How does this benefit your business?

  • Provides controlled and transparent system implementation costs.
  • Reduces risk of system failure and disappointment.
  • Increases awareness of how to avoid the pitfalls.
  • Business benefits are realised, business controls are maintained and functional barriers are bridged.
  • Assurance that performance is adequately tested prior to go-live.
  • Ensures the system development work is based on business needs.
  • Risk is balanced between client and supplier.
  • Expectations are managed and there is early warning of delays or problems.
