Not-for-Profit Organisations

Encompassing charities, education and registered providers of social housing, our non-profit organisations group combine detailed sector knowledge with the international reach of the BDO International network.

Charities

Our charity unit, led by Don Bawtree , serves many of the larger UK registered charities including British Red Cross, Macmillan Cancer Relief and Band Aid. Our case studies provide testament to the variety and complexity of the work we undertake. We contribute regularly to key sector and professional groups, as well as thought-leadership publications including Charity Finance. We are particularly expert in undertaking corporate finance, audit and tax work and enjoy strong relationships with relevant government bodies to meet your governance, internal audit and strategic planning needs.

Education

Our services to the sector range from the external audits of universities to the due diligence on mergers and acquisitions and governance reviews to the application of SORP and preparation for IFRS conversion. Our clients include a wide range of HEIs, schools and colleges, language colleges and training providers as well as government agencies and NDPBs. Our work, led by James Aston MBE, crosses both private and public sectors and runs from nursery to post graduate.

Our expertise in education is acknowledged through our membership of several government frameworks (‘approved adviser’ lists) including the Building Schools of the Future framework and the HEFCE framework.

We provide a wide range of financial and procurement advisory services across the education sector. We have advised on successful projects with capital values ranging from £5 million to over £100 million, and have the strength and depth to support our clients at all project stages from initial feasibility through to deal close and mobilisation.

Social Housing

Registered Providers of Social Housing continue to face new challenges from changes in the sector and the difficult economic climate. Those that want to grow will encounter some interesting times ahead. Financial viability, access to new finance, re-pricing of debt, competition for grants and an evolving regulatory framework are just some of the current issues that mean it’s no longer ‘business as usual’. With 30 years of experience in this sector our team, led by Philip Rego, provide a full offering of advisory services and contribute to industry thought through participation in sector conferences and publications including our own Social Housing Updates which are published throughout the year.
