Services and Support

The European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) was established in response to Kyoto together with, more specifically, the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Interpretation schemes formed by the United Nations Climate Change Committee (UNFCCC).  This has led to an entire market segment entirely focused on identifying and providing advice and support to low carbon projects in the developing world.  These projects earn carbon credits which can be traded on the EU ETS and a number of businesses are involved in providing project appraisal, verification, certification and carbon intermediary services to project owners and carbon counterparties.

BDO predict that whilst a Global Cap and Trade scheme may not be easy to establish in the short term, new schemes in North America, Australia and Japan could provide huge opportunities for carbon aggregators and intermediaries if CDM and successor schemes are continued post 2012 and common protocols for trading certificates between schemes are established.

We provide specialist tax, accounting advisory services and corporate finance services to this market segment and have an insight into its particular issues.
