Recycling and Waste Management

Emissions targets, financial incentives through the government Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC) scheme and new environmental legislation designed to reduce the amount of commercial and domestic waste the UK sends to landfill are all leading to increasing numbers of waste to energy projects (biomass, biogas and solid waste)

These can take the form of:

  • Co-firing of waste feedstock (wood pellets) into conventional fossil power stations
  • Biogas production from processing waste (anaerobic digestion, gasification)
  • Capture of landfill gases to produce power
  • Incineration

However these projects are carried out, better use of waste represents a clear dual opportunity.

More frugal re-use of our natural resources has clear energy and environmental benefits and the UK is recycling increasing amounts of paper, plastic and metals. The scale of the potential compared with the current reality however means that this market segment is only going to grow in its importance to the UK economy.
