Local government is facing its most challenging environment for a generation and authorities must be open minded about new ways to meet the needs of their communities. This report explores how social investment can offer local authorities a way of supporting new models of service delivery and a new source of investment in local outcomes.
The report looks at the links between the Big Society and government initiatives to grow the social investment market, including new powers for staff and communities to set up social enterprises and the launch of Big Society Capital. It examines why councils should be interested in social enterprise and social investment, and identifies a number of key actions which local authorities can take to support, grow and harness the social investment market for the benefit of local communities.
This report is the first time that the relationship between local government and social investment has been examined, and contains a number of ideas which councils can put into practice now, as well as radical proposals for the future.
