Businesses need a government that will "champion" the creation of wealth, it has been claimed.
The Institute of Directors (IoD) called for an increased focus on economic reform, noting that enterprise in the UK is facing a competitive and challenging environment.
Miles Templeman, director general of the organisation, said that a 'downsized' government is crucial to meeting business goals and encouraging growth.
"We're a week from the general election but we're still years from bringing the deficit and the size of the government under control," he added.
"If British business is to compete effectively in the 21st century we need a fundamental root and branch reform of the state. Government has got to get smaller and better. Unless we shrink the state, the state will shrink the economy."
The general election is due to be held next Thursday (May 6th).
