In order to kick-start a sustainable economic recovery, chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne needs to fast-track infrastructure projects.
This is according to general secretary of the Trades Union Congress Brendan Barber, who specified house building plans and road improvement projects ought to be prioritised.
He also called for the creation of a new state investment bank and reform of the existing financial sector, arguing the present system allows it to enrich itself, rather than serve the needs of the nation as a whole.
"Faced with a contracting economy, falling business and consumer confidence the chancellor needs to change course quickly and find a plan for growth," Mr Barber remarked, noting Conservative MP for Northamptonshire Brian Binley has lost confidence in his own party as a result of current policy.
Public transport infrastructure improvements are already underway, with the High Speed Two rail initiative having received the go-ahead from the coalition.
