Sustainable transport projects across the country could stand to benefit from the launch of a new government fund.
An investment of £15 million is to be targeted at the sector, transport minister Norman Baker announced yesterday (January 7th).
It is hoped access to employment will benefit from the measure, which will support job creation and encourage greater use of environmentally-friendly transport.
While the emphasis is to be on cycling, the cash injection complements the £7 million already committed to the sector by Network Rail.
This could be a popular decision by the coalition, as general secretary of the Trades Union Congress Brendan Barber recently called for national infrastructure projects to be fast-tracked.
Mr Baker claimed the move underlines the government's commitment to sustainability, adding: "If we are serious about reducing carbon, then we need to get more people walking and cycling. But we must do it in a way that boosts the economy."
