British car giant Ford is aiming to cut its manufacturing waste by 70 per cent across its European plants by 2016.
The decision comes after the British Retail Consortium (BRC) revealed the amount of waste generated by retailers, including food and packaging. Major retailers had pledged to cut the amount of rubbish taken to a landfill to under 15 per cent by 2013 but beat that target by 2011.
Now Ford has further strengthened its commitment to protecting the environment by revealing a green manufacturing plan that will not only cut waste production by 70 per cent over five years but will also reduce water consumption by 30 per cent in a bid to save €2.3 million (£1.9 million).
Stephen Odell, chairman and chief executive Ford Europe, said: "This plan represents our pledge to minimise Ford's impact on the environment both before and after our customers get behind the wheel. Sustainability makes just as much sense for Ford as a business as it does for the environment."
