Businesses could be starting to reduce their reliance on desktop computers in the workplace.
This is because a new study from IT research and advisory firm Gartner reveals shipments of PCs declined by 16 per cent in the final quarter of 2011.
It was specified this equates to 16.3 million units, with the annual total standing at 58.5 million.
Furthermore, this represents the fourth consecutive quarterly decline throughout Western Europe.
Principal analyst for Gartner Meike Escherich attributed the trend to the increasing uptake of mobile devices such as smartphones and media tablets.
Indeed, many firms could be turning to cloud computing solutions, as adoption of these products increased to 40 per cent, overtaking the traditional desktop computer.
"Uptake of professional PCs for migrations to Windows 7 remained subdued due to the troubled economic outlook," she commented, adding: "PC shipments in the professional segment declined 13.5 per cent in the fourth quarter."
