The UK's economy is facing a "crawl" to recovery, according to National Institute of Economic and Social Research.
Predictions from the institute suggest that GDP in the UK will grow by just one per cent in 2010 and will only increase to 2.25 per cent growth in 2011 and 2012.
Simon Kirby, an economist from the research group, commented on the possible effect this will have on the jobs market: "It is undeniable that we have moved back into a period of economic expansion and it is good news."
He added: "We just need to see those growth rates pick up before we can actually begin to make a dent into the unemployment stock, which we will probably rise by another 200,000 by 2011."
The institute also forecast that consumer spending will only grow by a marginal 0.3 per cent in 2010 after falling by 3.2 per cent in 2009.
