The Forum of Private Business (FPB) is warning business owners to ensure that they are on top of all their tax responsibilities and have updated HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) accordingly.
This comes as the Trades Union Congress is calling on the government to ensure that it takes action to close all tax loopholes.
However, the FPD has criticised HMRC's disproportionate treatment of small businesses in pursuing them over taxes very aggressively, while at the same time allowing larger companies to get away with tax avoidance on a much larger and more widespread scale.
FPB tax adviser Andrew Needham of VAT Specialists claimed that businesses need to be aware of the situation in order to avoid incurring large fines.
"This heavy-handed approach is the very opposite of the support that is desperately needed at this difficult time and HMRC risks further alienating firms hit by its disproportionate, targeted business records checks regime," he commented.
