Britons have been urged to plan early for Christmas 2011, following worries over their personal finances this year.
Research conducted by the Yorkshire Building Society has revealed that 83 per cent of Brits worry about their festive spending.
The study comes as the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) encouraged people to make a New Year's resolution to start thinking now about saving for next Christmas.
Retailers could benefit if consumers have set out a clear budget with realistic ideas about what they can afford to buy.
David Murphy, head of campaigns at the OFT, commented: "It may seem a bit early to be thinking about next Christmas, when many of us are still eating the leftovers from this one. But we want people to be in a position to enjoy Christmas without getting into financial difficulties and that often requires a bit of forward planning.
"It's all too easy to overspend so that we can create a special and memorable time for our friends and family."
