Alex Salmond, first minister in Scotland, has suggested that the country is a global leader in finance.
The comment came as Barclays announced plans to create up to 600 new jobs in Glasgow as part of it its ongoing expansion.
A grant of £6.6 million from Regional Selective Assistant funding managed by Scottish Enterprise will support the firm's expansion.
Mr Salmond said: "This government recognises the major contribution the financial services industry makes to Scotland's economy.
"We are determined to continue to support the industry in maintaining its strengths through the Financial Services Advisory Board, which brings together senior figures from the industry, trade unions, government and public sector partners to strengthen Scotland's position as global centre for financial services."
There are currently around 95,000 people employed in the Scottish financial services industry.
The sector is estimated to account for eight per cent of the country's GDP.
