Public sector employment has increased in certain areas of the country and decreased in others, recent figures suggest.
Published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the data revealed that employment in the NHS rose by 4.2 per cent during the first quarter of the year when compared with the same period in 2009.
However, while NHS employment grew in all parts of the UK, it increased most in the East Midlands, where it rose by 7.3 per cent.
Other areas of public sector employment have not faired as well, with a decrease of 6.2 per cent recorded for public administration in Wales.
David Matthews, ONS statistician, commented: "These new analyses will help users understand regional differences in public sector employment in more depth than before.
"Previously we had not published the industry breakdowns by region, only at national level."
Earlier this year, chancellor George Osborne announced in his emergency Budget that there will be cuts to public sector employment.
