The UK could face skills shortages if workers leave the country, it has been suggested.
A spokesman for the Trades Union Congress claimed that migration levels are "a good indicator of economic virility".
He added: "The finding that expats are considering leaving the UK suggests that the prospects for GDP and labour market growth in the UK are weak.
"If large numbers of workers leave the UK, the economy will be left with damaging skills shortages that could further hamper our prospects of recovery."
The comments come as HSBC Bank International revealed in its Expat Explorer Survey 2010, that 67 per cent of expats in the UK believed that the economy has worsened since the start of 2009.
Theresa May, the home secretary, recently announced that the number of workers entering the UK from outside Europe is to be subjected to a new limit.
