An audit of access to cash machines has revealed that people with government-issued Post Office Card Accounts are unable to use their cards with free-to-use cash machines.
The report found that these consumers are instead obliged to travel of a post office to access their money, which can prove problematic.
Furthermore, a lack of free-to-use cash machines was identified in some lower-income areas, including Luton south and Kirkby in Liverpool.
Edwin Schooling Latter, managing director of the UK cash machine network LINK, commented: "Working with government and consumer groups we've had a massive success in spreading free-to-use cash machines into lower-income areas previously without ATMs.
"The final push to see this important work to a close would be to ensure the government's own cardholders - four million people receiving their benefits through a Post Office Card Account - can access the free ATMs."
LINK is also looking into reducing cash machine fraud in order to maintain and enhance customer security.
