It has been suggested that retailers are concerned about the impact of plans to devolve power.
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has said that although retailers support the drive for more business involvement in local decision making, there are some concerns over how this could impact on national business.
BRC made their issues known in a submission responding to the government's consultation on Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs).
The group called for reassurances that LEPs will have sufficient central support to avoid additional costs that could come with the implementation of different regulatory regimes in different localities.
Stephen Robertson, director-general at the BRC, commented: "Retailers are already working with others in local communities to create the best possible environments in which to trade, shop and live.
"We support the idea of greater local involvement in decision making. But the benefits of local decision making must be balanced against the extra costs and uncertainty that could be imposed on national businesses."
