The second quarter of 2010 saw retail full-time equivalent employment rise by 3.6 per cent compared with the same three months of 2009.
This is according to the latest Retail Employment Monitor report from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and Bond Pearce.
According to the study, there was also a 3.1 per cent net increase in store numbers.
Stephen Robertson, director-general of the BRC, commented: "It's a remarkable achievement that, in the face of economic uncertainty, retailers in our monitor have created 22,000 jobs and added nearly 500 stores since this time last year."
He added: "Economic conditions and consumer confidence have certainly improved in the last 12 months but from a weak starting point."
The news follows the latest Consumer Confidence survey from Nielsen and the BRC.
Despite the reported improvement in the retail sector, the survey fell by two points in the last three months largely due to concerns surrounding the wider economy.
